Dr. Hutchinson is the owner and principal optometrist of Pacific View Eye Care Center. He has been the director of this practice since 1982, when he first arrived in Encinitas. This practice has been a family practice since its inception, and over the years, Dr. Hutchinson has watched his patients grow from children into adults. Now, quite a few of the young people he sees are the children of his long-term patients, and many of these older patients now considered lifetime friends.
Belief in the philosophy of “high tech and high touch” has always been fundamental to Dr. Hutchinson. He uses the most cutting-edge technology to provide the best eye care for his patients. He has always surrounded himself with exceptionally knowledgeable and pleasant staff to give the most personalized eye care experience possible to his patients.
Dr. Hutchinson is a graduate of the University Of California Berkeley School Of Optometry. His Bachelor’s degree is from the University Of California Los Angeles, but his first year of college was at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He considers himself a lifetime student and continues to take courses and classes to keep abreast of the latest in optometry and eye care and increase his general knowledge of the world and his environment.
Besides providing family optometric and medical eye care, Dr. Hutchinson has a particular interest in Night Lens Therapy, allowing patients to see without glasses or daytime contact lenses. Preventing progressive nearsightedness is another strong interest. He also fits specialty contact lenses for hard-to-fit corneas and works with patients suffering from dry eye disease.
Dr. Hutchinson believes in giving back to his community. He has been a member of the Encinitas Rotary Club for 34 years and has served as President. He has been a Director of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. Through his practice, he supports the world-wide organization Optometry Giving Sight which provides eye care to disadvantaged people.
He has many outside interests, including travel, CrossFit, hiking, reading mystery novels, and golf. He holds a private pilot’s license, and although not actively flying now, he used to fly the friendly skies of Hutch Air. Dr. Hutchinson is married. He has three sons, two daughters-in-law, and one brand new granddaughter. He has always greatly appreciated his patients who support him and his local small business.
Dr. Hutchinson is a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Optometry and is a member of the American Optometric Association and the California Optometric Association. He is a past officer of the San Diego County Optometric Association and a member of the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control and the Scleral Lens Education Society. Dr. Hutchinson serves as an Adjunct Clinical Faculty as Primary Preceptor for the Southern College of Optometry. He has authored the book Computer Eye Stress. Also, he developed a computer-based visual acuity chart, which has been sold through Medtronic and Reichert Instruments. He holds a patent on communicating to deaf patients during an eye exam. Over the years, he has been engaged as a speaker on various optometric topics.
